Every death on every road in Great Britain 1999-2010

December 14, 2011

A bit grim perhaps (there’ll be more jolly sites to round off the week), but with Christmas just around the corner and the liklihood of seasonal campaigns to stop people from drinking and driving, here’s a sobering map upon which is plotted every road collision in which someone died.

Tunnels – Hindhead vs Laerdal

July 27, 2011

After four-and-a-half years of work and an outlay of £371m, today sees the opening of the southbound section of the Hindhead Tunnel, the longest tunnel of its type in the UK on the A3 from London to Portsmouth. The 1.8km bore through the Devil’s Punch Bowl seems almost puny however when compared with the Laerdal Tunnel in Norway which, at 24.5km in length, is the longest road tunnel in the world. You can read more about the Laerdal Tunnel here

Live Ships

December 6, 2010

Some months ago TOTD had the privilege to travel to the Isle of Wight on the bridge of the Fastcat ferry and was shown by my captain friend the Automatic Identification System. This listed the names, speed, destination etc. of all vessels above a certain tonnage in the vicinity. Well now you can view information based on AIS data for vessels throught the world. Zoom in on the world map, click on a vessel icon and you can view additional details such as ship photos, flag of ownership and estimated time of arrival at port.
