Tunnels – Hindhead vs Laerdal

After four-and-a-half years of work and an outlay of £371m, today sees the opening of the southbound section of the Hindhead Tunnel, the longest tunnel of its type in the UK on the A3 from London to Portsmouth. The 1.8km bore through the Devil’s Punch Bowl seems almost puny however when compared with the Laerdal Tunnel in Norway which, at 24.5km in length, is the longest road tunnel in the world.
