Barclays Cycle Hire animation

February 7, 2011

The Barclays Cycle Hire scheme in London allows you to take a cycle from a docking station, ride it where you like and then return it for the next person to use.

Here’s a lovely animation that uses data supplied by Transport for London to show the flow of these hire bikes during the 4th October Tube strike in 2010.

Love Your Bike Portsmouth

May 27, 2010

This is BIG Green Commuter Challenge Week, when many commuters will hopefully be exploring more sustainable ways of getting to work. Sunday 30th May also happens to be a day to celebrate bike culture during the Love Your Bike Portsmouth event, which is sponsored by The University of Portsmouth Creative Campus Initiative and Portsmouth City Council’s Health Town’s Initiative.

TOTD was particularly intrigued by the Gocycle, which forms part of a display in a shop window in Southsea. There’s a lovely animation of how it works on the Gocycle site.

Slowcoast

April 28, 2010

On 21 June 2009, Nick Hand set off on a 4541 mile cycle ride around the coast of Great Britain. The short documentary soundslides are a feature of this site. There’s an entry for Southsea, featuring members of the Southsea Breakfast Club.

You can get your bike checked and ready to ride at one of the free Check ‘n’ Mend events, which begin today.

Commuting time maps

March 3, 2010

Following on from yesterday’s post, here’s another great site from mySociety.org. The interactive function of the house prices map is very neat. TOTD was particularly interested in the public transport vs cycling map – it would be great to have a version for Portsmouth.

Do The Test

January 4, 2010

This campaign was developed in 2008 for Transport for London to promote and increase the road safety of cyclists and drivers. You’ll be amazed at what you missed while watching the basketball game, and can you spot the 21 changes in the Whodunnit?

Happy Birthday TOTD

October 8, 2008

We’re a year old today.  Trust you’ve been enjoying the last 245 postings.

Here are some highlights(?) from the past year:

November saw our posting which has received the largest number of hits (over 4000):

January had us delving into a scary world of Scrabble with the ‘short story’ _Craziest_:

February saw the still quite moving video about world creation in Second Life:

April saw the limited range of movement the Apollo 11 crew made after travelling so far:

No round up of the year would be complete with a mention of the biggest item in our tag cloud: Lego.  May saw three entries:

June had some retro computing:

July quite wore us out following Rob Piatt (you can now download his whole blog in chronological order as a PDF file if you want to revisit his quest for an anecdote).

August had us bookmooching:

Finally, there’d be trouble at t’mill if this wasn’t picked from September:

Here’s to another year of TOTD – recently okayed by the powers that be to continue – we hope you all have a great year as well.

rode to the top

July 28, 2008

A couple of weeks ago TOTD mentioned a guy cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats.  Apparently he made it last Friday after 13 days.  Well done that lunatic.  We’re still green with envy.  And his quest for an anecdote was a great success too.

Of course it’s still possible to donate to his charity and he’s past the £1000 mark now.  Still looks a bit uphill to his target but we’ll bet he’s glad the pedalwork is behind him.
