Europe Day

In a Thing of the Day extra, we thought we’d mention that today is Europe Day.

On the 9th May 1950 the French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman called European countries to pool together their coal and steel production to create the first concrete foundation of a European federation. This was brought about by the threat of a Third World War where coal and steel production was the basis of military power.

Everything that constitutes the European Union today began on the 9th May and that is why during the Milan Summit of EU leaders it was decided to celebrate this as “Europe Day”.
