Ronald Searle and Molesworth

by

Thing of the Day was saddened last week to hear of the death of Ronald Searle.

All the reports focussed on his creation of the St Trinian’s schoolgirls who, of course, a delight.

But TOTD has long had a much softer spot for the Molesworth books which as “any fule kno”, contain his marvellous illustrations.

If you can find a copy of Down With Skool or its sequels, they’re well worth looking out – although they’re quite dark once you get past the surface level humour.  There’s a tribute here:

And h2g2 has an entry (http://h2g2.com/dna/h2g2/A245620) which we fully support in suggesting Molesworth as the patron saint of internet users and bad spellers everywhere.
