Belt Up!

On this day in 1986 the law was changed to make the wearing of seat belts compulsory. It is estimated that in the 23 years since this law was introduced 46, 000 lives have been saved thanks to wearing a seat belt.

However, in 2007 of the 1,432 car occupants killed, research indicates that some 34 per cent were not wearing a seat belt. In recent surveys 10% of people admitted not wearing a seat bealt in the front and 24% when travelling in the back of a car.
